PM Candidate Sunak “Killer”
British Culture Minister Nadine Dorries has sparked outrage by describing prime ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak as a “murderer” by incumbent Boris Johnson.
In an edition of the Mail on Sunday newspaper, Tories warned Conservative Party members about the ex-treasury secretary: “The killer’s bright smile, soft voice and even his diminutive stature really fooled many of us,” the minister wrote. He also retweeted a picture of Sunak Brutus stabbing the prime minister from behind as Julius Caesar.
Doris is considered one of Johnson’s closest confidants and is backing Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in the election campaign to succeed him. Sunak is walking the “path of treason” and has plotted against Johnson, the minister continued.
For weeks, the former finance minister has defended himself against accusations that he had long been plotting his prime ministerial bid and that his resignation ultimately signaled the end of Johnson. The outgoing Prime Minister also commented accordingly.
Tory MPs slammed the posts as hateful and divisive. Earlier, Doris renounced the rich Sunak’s expensive clothes. In the “Mail” he wrote that he had now overstepped the mark by criticizing Sunak’s appearance. “I wanted to highlight Rishi’s incorrect dress code to warn Tory members against being fooled by appearances, as has happened to many of us who have served in Cabinet with the Chancellor of the Exchequer,” he said.
Greg Hands, a Sunak supporter and economic affairs secretary, called the accusations “tasteless”. On Sky News he recalled the assassination of Conservative MP David Ames in October 2021. Less than a year has passed since then, Hands said. Statements are dangerous. (SDA)
