‘Bitter evening’ and ‘It bothers me’: FCL’s clearly better team loses to Basel despite attacking fireworks – fans cause interruption

In the last match before the winter break, FC Luzern lost 0-1 to FC Basel despite having more chances. Meanwhile, the fans protested and caused the match to stop.

FC Lucerne: FC Basel 0:1 (0:0)

FCL starting lineup

Compared to last week’s match against FC Zurich (1:1), coach Mario Frick is making some changes. Denis Cemani, who is no longer injured, returns to the starting position, raising the average age. Last weekend it was 22.5 years, while today it is 24.6 years.

Mauricio Willeman returns to the bench. Dario Ulrich, Jakub Kadak and Teddy Oko also take their places there. Returner Martin Frederic is no longer banned. Max Mayer and Asoma Abubakar are playing again today from the start.

Objectives

Minute 66: The Champions League has more chances – yet Basel are ahead. Jonathan Dubassin shoots into the far corner after a ball from Djordje Jovanovic.

Match report

Shortly before Christmas and the associated winter break, things got serious again for FCL. A win over a struggling Basel side would be more than desirable. In fact, Basel’s first shot on target belonged to Fabian Frey. However, this remains harmless. On the other hand, Lucerne won the first two corners of the match shortly after.

By the way, Mario Frick’s team has become older: compared to the match against FC Zurich, the average age rises from 22.5 to 24.6 years. Luca Jaquez is one of the few young players left in the starting lineup. He created a critical situation in the eighth minute when the ball hit his hand inside the penalty area. At least: Fortunately, the referee did not award a penalty kick to Lucerne. However, this is not the only blunder Lucerne made in the starting phase. Fifteen minutes later, the action moves to the stands: fans protest the collective punishments with heavy smoke, and even set off a fire alarm. Due to visibility there is a short interruption in the game.

Even after the match continued, there were still few chances on either side, even if Ardon Gashari and Sofiane Chader worked tirelessly for the Lucerne side. After a brilliant turn of play by Chader, Gašari scored against the post just under half an hour, while Max Meyer failed to get past Bayern goalkeeper Marwin Hitz after preparation work by Gašari and Severin Otiger. Shortly before half-time, FCL were leading with a shooting ratio of 11:3 and five corners, but with only two shots on target, this is of little benefit to the team. So we went into the break without any goals.

After the restart, FC Lucerne unleashed a veritable attacking display of fireworks in the first five minutes. First, it was Otiger who almost scored a few seconds later, then Chader won possession after a mistake by Basel in the build-up. If Hitz had not worked his magic here, the first goal of the match would have been scored by now. . Jashari also brings similar danger before Chader tries his luck again. As protests against the police continue in the stands, the people of Basel are slowly finding their way back into the game. But Lucerne remains the stronger team. But they still don’t know how to take advantage of their opportunities. So it happens as it should happen: Basel made it 1-0 shortly before the 70th minute of the match. This basically came out of nowhere. Lucerne then continues to search for an equaliser, for example through Otiger, who fails with his header. Do new players like it? Frick brings Teddy Oko, Thibault Kledje and Lars Villier.

In the 83rd minute, another great opportunity for FCL. But Oko did not hit the crossbar until after the crowd in front of Basel’s goal. He does not want today to happen to the people of Lucerne. Even the twelfth corner was unable to achieve the goal for the hosts. So the clearly better FCL leaves the field as losers. This means that the central Swiss team will spend the winter in sixth place in the table.

Here’s what the FCL coach says

“We were ahead in all statistics. There were many scoring opportunities and we did not take advantage of them. A very bitter evening.”

“We are very ambitious, very ambitious. We knew that with the three points we would return to the top. It bothers me. But we will not bury our heads in the sand.”
