The story goes back years – and it says something about the pace of the Swiss judiciary. However, the sentence of the Basel Criminal Court against football player Brill Embolo leaves no room for doubt.
The Swiss player was sentenced to a conditional fine of 45 daily rates of CHF 3,000 for multiple threats. This earns 135 thousand francs. Embolo, who earns €2.82m a year at Monaco, only has to pay if he relapses within two years.
The incident took place on the streets of Basel in May 2018: Empolo is said to have been involved in a struggle with other young people at dawn. He said: I will destroy you, don’t you know who I am? I’m going to cut you down, I’m going to flatten you.” She also mentioned “son of a bitch.” Apparently his best friend got violent and broke his nose.
Embolo doesn’t seem to get bothered much. At the court session, he was deliberately casual and appeared loose-fitting. He passed judgment. But he didn’t fail to post his disdain for the judge’s ruling on Instagram: “The truth is, you never know who’s going to light up the sky just by being yourself. Cheek.”
He also posted a photo of reporters in front of the court and wrote: “Great work again.” A song can be heard in the background with the evocative title “Only God Can Judge Me”.
If Brill Empolo is not mistaken.
