Nuuk, Greenland’s capital: Air Greenland’s new hub will open at the end of 2024

Nuuk, Greenland’s capital: Air Greenland’s new hub will open at the end of 2024

The airport in Greenland’s capital is being expanded for international operations. The Airbus A330 Neo will be the first large aircraft to land in Nuuk in November 2024.

Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, has had an airport since 1979. However, the runway is about 900 meters long and there are only domestic flights. But this is now changing: the runway will be extended to 2,220 meters and Nok will receive international flights. A new station and a new tower are also being built. Work has been ongoing since fall 2019.

Now the state-run Kalaalit Airports Corporation has announced the opening date. It will be November 28, 2024. Air Greenland’s Airbus A330-800 has announced that it will be the first large aircraft to land. In 1979 the airport was opened by Air Greenland’s de Havilland Canada Dash 7 aircraft.

“Nuk will be the new center”

The airline announced that it will adjust its flight schedule and add new flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen. “Nuk Airport will be the new hub for international and domestic flights throughout the country,” said Jakob Netter Sørensen, President of Air Greenland.

Kangerlussuaq Airport is currently the hub of Greenland. It is a former military airfield and the town of the same name has a population of only about 500 people. Nearly 20,000 people live in Nuuk. In the future, Kangerlussuaq Airport will once again be used exclusively for military flights.

Uncertainty at Ilulissat Airport

Kalaalit Airports is also expanding the airport to 2,200 runways in Ilulissat. But there are delays. Therefore, the company has not set an opening date, but hopes that the airport will be completed as planned before the end of 2024.
