For the first time, Julian Alaphilippe wins a stage in the Tour of Italy. He drove the race for long periods.

The decisive attack on the twelfth stage of the Giro came about 11 kilometers from the finish. Julien Alaphilippe (Soudal – Quick Step) saw off fellow runaway Italian Mirco Maestri and hunted alone to take his first Giro d'Italia win. And he was successful. The Frenchman did not allow his pursuers to get close and secured today's victory after 193 kilometers with a solo arrival at Fano.

Lots of attacks at first

The twelfth stage of the Giro d'Italia with several small climbs was intended for breakaways. This is how it happened: At the beginning of the stage there were several escape attempts and after a few kilometers the first escape group was formed. As a result, many drivers in the field sensed their chance for a good result at this stage and attacked.

Behind the escape group with the Italians Maestri and Filippo Ganna as well as Alaphilippe, two large pursuit groups were formed. However, they were never able to catch the outliers. Gana had to retire early and so it was Maestri and Alaphilippe who led the race for long periods until Alaphilippe's decisive attack. The field smoothed out and rolled towards Fano several minutes behind the leading group.

A special victory for Alaphilippe

With his first Giro victory, Alaphilippe was able to end what was, by his standards, a long drought. For the first time in almost a year he was able to celebrate a single day's victory. Alaphilippe has now celebrated stage victories in all three grand tours – the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta.

The twelfth division had no effect on the overall ranking. Tadej Pogacar (Team UAE) continues to lead by 2:40 minutes over Welshman Geraint Thomas (Ineos).

And this is how it continues

The thirteenth section of the Giro continues on Friday. This takes riders from Ricone on the Adriatic coast to the Po Valley near Cento in Emilia-Romagna.
