Nadine Fondrich missed out on the medals in the classic race at the Nordic Ski World Championships in Planica. The winners were Jona Sundling (Sweden) and Johannes Hosflotte Klapoe (Northern Norway).

It’s a disappointment for the three-time World Cup winner: Nadine Vanderich failed in the classic technique cross-country race in the semi-finals, and thus went empty-handed in her platform.

In her off-season, the Lucerne native had to compete against all the top Swedes, led by Olympic champion Jona Sundling, and Norwegian Kristen Stafas-Skystad. She couldn’t do anything against this top-tier quartet and had to settle for fifth place. Already in front, Fähndrich in eighth place did not make a convincing impression.

The Swedish Quartet at the Top

Alina Mayer was the only other Swiss woman to qualify, but the quarter-final stage was the end of the streak. Finishing fourth in heat one, Meyer temporarily secured the lucky loser position, but was soon forced to relinquish it again. Desiree Steiner and Leah Fisher stopped in qualifying.

As had been the case two years earlier in Oberstdorf, victory at Planica went to the outclassed Sandling. In the final race, 28-year-old left-handed teammate Emma Rebohm, who took her first world championship medal, was trailed. The complete Swedish victory was completed by Maja Dahlqvist (third) and Lynn Svan (fourth), who were ahead of Skestad and Tyrell Odnes Wing, two athletes from arch-rival Norway.

Kläbo’s dominance continues

In the men’s category, defending champion Johannes Hosflotte-Klabo consolidated his advantage in the sprint. The Norwegian Olympic champion dominated the final at will and was already able to enjoy it on home straight. It is Kläbo’s fifth consecutive major event title. Behind the leader, compatriot Pal Golberg took silver ahead of the surprising Frenchman Jules Chapazz.

The Swiss men’s trio never made it past the qualifiers. Erwan Kasr, 31, was just 12 percent shorter.
