No upgrades, no new planes
Eurowings strike becomes a special target
Pilots of Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings have been on strike for two days. Management is now taking action. Promotions have been cancelled. Suspension of new aircraft.

The Eurowings plane has been grounded since Monday.
Swiss pilots want to strike if talks with Swiss CEO Dieter Franks (50) are not fruitful. Airlines leaders are demanding a better balance between their job and their private lives. And a better salary. And in order to give weight to this requirement, they threaten that all machines will remain on the ground at the end of October.
Better to look to Germany. Then they see how Lufthansa reacts to the strikes. As a result of the pilots’ strike at the Eurowings, they pulled out the red pen. The company has announced that the strength of its fleet of 81 aircraft planned for 2023 will initially be reduced by five aircraft. The planned creation of at least 200 additional Eurowings Germany jobs in the cockpit and in the cabin will be halted with immediate effect.
Temporary contracts only
But that’s not all: pilots who are currently training receive only temporary contracts. As demand drops, all promotions to captain will also be discontinued, the company said.
In a bitter collective feud, the cockpit pilots’ union Vereinigung is battling with management for the pilots’ relief. Several machines remained on the ground again on Tuesday.
14 more days
Among other things, the union requires an additional 14 days. The administration recently offered ten. In an open letter addressed to the workforce on Monday, management threatened to withdraw the offer if the strike continued.
Because of the strike costs — according to the company, a double-digit amount per day — jobs are at risk. The union allowed a Monday night alarm to pass. Now the pilots are paying the bill. (pbe/SDA)
