The former US president is scheduled to testify in person on Monday in the fraud trial against Donald Trump in New York. Trump will be sworn in when prosecutors question him. The statement of Trump, against whom several criminal trials are ongoing, is eagerly awaited. It’s about the future of the 77-year-old corporate empire. Anyone who makes a verifiably false statement under oath will face charges of perjury.
The trial in New York has led to Trump’s angry outbursts against the judge, court staff and the prosecutor in recent weeks. Trump wants to be re-elected as President of the United States from the Republican Party next year. Prosecutors accuse Trump, his children and employees of manipulating the value of the Trump Organization for years in order to obtain cheaper loans and insurance contracts. Judge Arthur Engoron had already confirmed this ahead of the trial – with the proceedings now primarily about determining potential penalties.

Trump is not threatened with prison time or a direct impact on his bid for the presidency, but a conviction could cause him significant business damage. Attorney General Letitia James wants to ensure that Trump must pay US$250 million (about 224 million francs) and no longer be allowed to do business in New York. It is unclear whether he would also have to give up properties such as New York’s iconic Trump Tower if he is convicted.
Several of Trump’s children have recently testified. However, Donald Jr. and Eric denied any allegations in court and said they had nothing to do with the Trump Organization’s accounting and billing.
Because of the numerous verbal gaffes committed by Trump, who was personally present at the trial several times, Judge Engoron had already threatened him with dire consequences, imposing a fine and banning defamation of court employees.
Trump is considered the most promising candidate to run for president from the Republican Party in elections held this year. According to many observers, he is using the trial as an election advertisement and repeatedly claims that the trial is part of a political campaign against him.
