New GIMP Guide – GNU/Linux.ch

New GIMP Guide – GNU/Linux.ch

Tuesday, March 7, 2023, Ralph Hersel

On many projects, the documentation is a file Achilles’ heel. I don’t mean so much the documentation of the source code, but rather the complex production of manuals. Whoever now thinks of the adage “read the damn manual” is not wrong. Both software and hardware should be designed intuitively so that the user does not have to read manuals.

Many users trust a) the videos explaining the app, or b) try it out. This may work for simple applications; With more complex software, like GIMP, the intuitive method often fails. Explainer videos can still be a big help, though they often waste a lot of time on familiar things: “When will the part of the video that interests me finally appear?”

That’s why I think manuals are essential for large applications, useful but time consuming.

No matter how you feel about it, the GIMP team now has it New evidence Provided for current version 2.10.34. The guide is available in 27 different languages, with the degree of translation varying widely. The English version is complete, the German version is 68% subtitled.

And this is another good opportunity to show your love for the community. If you speak German and English and are interested in GIMP, this is a good opportunity to give something back to the community. You can translate a chapter or two from the GIMP guide. The GIMP team asks:

In order to improve the manual and translations, we are looking for more volunteers to help us with this. please are interestedTo write English guide documents or to write the guide translateThen please contact us.
