The largest cruise ship in the world, “Icon of the Seas,” begins its maiden voyage
It cost $2 billion, and now the “Icon of the Seas” has set sail for the first time – with 5,600 passengers on board.
A scene of transcendence: The world's longest cruise ship, measuring 365 metres, set sail on its maiden voyage in the Caribbean on Saturday (local time) from its home port in Miami, Florida. Royal Caribbean said demand for the maiden voyage on “Icon of the Seas” was “unprecedented.” The ship, built in a Finnish shipyard, can accommodate more than 5,600 passengers, in addition to 2,350 crew members.
The coaster is divided into eight different areas and includes seven pools, nine whirlpools and a 17-metre-high waterfall. Guests can choose from 40 different restaurants and bars. Entertainment will be provided by 50 musicians and comedians as well as a 16-piece orchestra.
The $2 billion ship, which is five times larger than the Titanic, runs on liquefied natural gas. The 'Icon of the Seas' will now spend a week in the Caribbean before returning to Miami.
