Liverpool beat Villa, Arsenal win

Brentford 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Things were not going well for Tottenham Hotspur for long at the start of the Premier League classic “Boxing Day”. Brentford took a well-deserved lead after 15 minutes and almost doubled just before half-time – but Ivan Toni was ruled out for offside.

He made up for his goal after the break and increased it to 2: 0. This pushed Tottenham into the lead again, as Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg equalized with a double kick. And shortly before the end of the match, the London team had a chance to win three points in the person of Heung-min Son – the South Korean player who just missed.

Leicester 0-3 Newcastle

The World Cup break couldn’t dampen Newcastle United’s momentum. A surprise Premier League side with Swiss defender Fabian Scheer won easily 3-0 at Leicester on Boxing Day.

Newcastle celebrated their sixth consecutive win and were temporarily relegated to second place – albeit with two more matches to spare.

Aston Villa 1-3 Liverpool

Liverpool pulled off a relatively safe win away from Aston Villa. Only at the beginning of the second half did the Reds lose control of the match. They were already leading 2-0 before the break thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. The hosts’ goal didn’t really worry Jurgen Klopp’s team. About ten minutes before the end, the decision was made 1: 3.

Arsenal 3-1 West Ham

Arsenal’s 3-1 win over West Ham United was their 13th win in their 15th league game of the season. The North Londoners are now seven points ahead of Newcastle United and eight ahead of champions Manchester City, albeit with two games in hand.

On Boxing Day, the traditional Boxing Day, Arsenal fell behind for a controversial penalty offense before half-time but turned the tide with three goals between the 53rd and 69th minutes. Swiss midfield strategist Granit Xhaka played the final pass to Gabriel Martinellis 2:1 and was also involved in setting up 3:1.
