Berlin, Munich US chipmaker Intel expects much higher costs for its planned plant in Magdeburg. As the Handelsblatt family learned from government circles, the American group is now planning an investment of 27 billion euros. This is ten billion euros more than when the project began in early 2021.
Intel is increasing pressure on the federal government. The chip maker has been negotiating with the Federal Economy Ministry for months about expanding investment assistance for the plant in Magdeburg. So far, €6.8 billion has been pledged, but Intel is now claiming nearly ten billion euros, according to Chambers.
The request divides the federal government. According to the relevant government representatives, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Chancellery indicated that they are willing to pay Intel more subsidies. On the other hand, the Federal Ministry of Finance continues to insist that state aid not be increased.
