Dozens of tornadoes wreak havoc in the United States
Dozens of tornadoes have wreaked havoc in parts of the United States. Despite the extensive damage, the outcome was largely harmless to the public – politicians call it a “miracle”.
OMAHA (dpa) – Several tornadoes have caused extensive damage in the Midwest. The city of Omaha in the state of Nebraska and its surroundings were particularly hard hit. Around 150 houses there were damaged or destroyed, local media reported on Saturday evening (local time), citing police.
Photos and videos showed the buildings, which contained only a mountain of rubble. There were also reports of nearly two dozen injuries, but no fatalities. Also, electricity was cut off in thousands of homes. According to weather service estimates, the “twister” had sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour on Friday.
“We're very fortunate that there were very few injuries,” said Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer. The alarm systems worked well in the city of about half a million people. It saved people's lives. Nebraska Governor Jim Billon, who visited the site, said it was “an extraordinary miracle that such a storm escaped without loss of life.”
In Lancaster County, reports continued of about 70 people being rescued from an industrial building that collapsed in the storm. In its path of destruction, a tornado moved across the Missouri River into the neighboring state of Iowa. There he inflicted severe damage on the small town of Minden. About 50 houses were completely destroyed.
On Friday and Saturday alone, dozens of tornadoes and violent tornadoes were reported in five states, CNN reported. Severe weather warnings are in effect for about nine million residents.
