Federal regulation says utilities must be at least 95% full by November 1st. This value is now generally reached. However, the regulation states that every storage facility must comply with this requirement. This is not the case: some plants are much higher, others much lower.
Gas lasts for two months
In quantitative terms, the head of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Muller, said that the stored gas is enough for about two months of the cold winter. “Well-stocked tanks will help us in the winter.”
At the same time, the head of the authorities emphasized that the storage tanks were far from sufficient for the entire heating period and that additional efforts were needed. “In order to avoid gas emergency in the winter, the projects that have been initiated to increase gas imports must also be implemented.” He was referring to the new liquid gas stations on the German coast, which are due to start operating early in the year.
Even in the cold winter you have to save
In addition, gas supplies must remain stable in neighboring countries, and domestic gas consumption must decline by at least 20 percent, Mueller said. “It depends on each individual.”
Referring to the 29 percent drop in gas consumption by households and small businesses over the past week, he added that this was largely due to warm weather and such savings should also be made in the cold winter. Mueller noted that the stockpile level on February 1 should be at least 40 percent.
