FC Bayern defender Giulia Quinn’s World Cup dream has been dashed. National coach Martina Voss-Decklenburg justified the decision.

MUNICH – Germany’s women’s national team has good prospects at this summer’s soccer World Cup. The European vice-champions will look to play for the title in Australia and New Zealand after national coach Martina Voss-Decklenburg announced an extended 28-man squad on Wednesday afternoon. However, one of the most famous faces of the DFB women is missing: it was not enough for a nomination for Giulia Gwinn from FC Bayern.

Born: July 2, 1999 in Eilingen

Position: Right-back, midfielder

FC Bayern defender Giulia Quinn to miss World Cup after tearing second cruciate ligament

The 23-year-old right-back has been suffering for a long time. In early October, he tore his cruciate ligament during training with the national team, and he had already suffered the same injury in September 2020. Nevertheless, Quinn was included in the squad for the 2021 European Championship and was in the starting XI for all the games, Germany’s 2–1 defeat in the final against hosts England.

However, a place in the squad is not enough this time around for the World Cup, which starts on July 20, even though Quinn has already been training under a lot of pressure and has partially returned to team training. Didn’t come back to Bayern. He played his last competitive game on 2 October in a 4–0 win at Bayern Duisburg. In no time, she was seriously injured.

Missing match practice, Quinn now has to support her team on TV from home – the matter of TV rights for the Women’s World Cup needs to be clarified. After two scheduled friendlies against Vietnam and Zambia, they travel to Australia in mid-July, with Germany’s World Cup opener in Melbourne on July 24. The first opponent is African Nations finalist Morocco.

Gwynn’s non-consideration was done “in very serious consultation” with FC Bayern, Voss-Decklenburg said on PK on Wednesday, as was teammate Linda Dalmann, who is out due to a torn syndesmosis ligament. “Giuli is coming from a second cruciate ligament injury, she is 23 years young. It is a very, very serious injury in football. She is still a little ahead of schedule in the rehabilitation course, but still unable to do full team training,” explained the national coach.

Giulia Gwinn: Martina Voss-Tecklenburg had to make a difficult decision

“She sometimes reacted to things with a muscle, there was no clear picture. In the end, it was a very difficult decision what to say for and against taking Giuli with us. In the end, future opportunities and common sense speak against it,” Voss-Decklenburg said. The 55-year-old said he hopes to “play a lot of matches over the next few years” with Quinn and spoke of it as “not an easy decision”.

In place of Quinn, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Sophia Kleinhern will mostly work on the right side of defense and she has already been able to prove herself in the last few internationals. Full-back Sarai Linder from Hoffenheim, who has only played one international match so far, is an option for Quinn’s position and is in the provisional squad. “She’s been really good in the league lately and she can bring this defensive style of play and physicality,” Voss-Decklenburg said of the freshman. The gap Quinn leaves behind is even bigger. (ajr)
