pain. The clothing store of the German Red Cross (DRK) has been on Peiner Lehmkuhlenweg since 2016. But now the neighborhood association is looking for new rooms. Not only have the former buildings become too small, but they are also difficult to access by public transportation.

“Originally, the clothing store arose during the refugee crisis in 2015,” explains Ralf Niedreiter, Director of the DRK District Association. At that time, the rooms were first and then next to the blowing hall in Groß Ilsede, which temporarily served as accommodation for refugees. About a year later, a move to Lehmkuhlenweg followed, to the former offices of the city administration, which made them available to the DRK. The clothing store is still located here today, in the immediate vicinity of where the refugees were staying.
300 to 400 people come every month
This also made sense, says Niedreiter: Because at first it was the refugees who benefited from the clothing donations — and then they had short runs. “In the meantime, demand from this direction has decreased significantly.” But more and more people in need from all over the region are coming to the clothing store: currently there are about 300 to 400 people per month, manager Diana Kobe estimates.

Due to the high demand, 70 square meters of clothing store on Lehmkuhlenweg became too little, Kobe continued. “Now 100 square meters would be ideal for us,” adds Niedreiter. In addition, it should be easy to get to the new clothing store by bus – because this is not the case in Lehmkuhlenweg, where there are mainly commercial spaces. However, according to Niederreiter, the chambers should not be located outside Peine or Stederdorf – that would be too decentralized. W: Rooms should be on one floor as a self-contained unit, with toilets for volunteers and a small ‘recreation room’. A track for a delivery vehicle would also be desirable.

The city makes rooms at Lehmkuhlenweg available to the DRK free of charge. However, if there’s a good, affordable rental offer elsewhere, it’s definitely worth a look, says Niedreiter. In this case, the rent will be funded by membership fees and donations.
A new wardrobe can extend your working hours
The clothing store is currently open Thursday and Friday mornings, Wednesday afternoons and by appointment. Not only used clothes are provided, but also cups, plates, toys, bed linen and towels. For three euros and upon presentation of previously issued Proof of Need, you can take everything you need with you. Perhaps the new clothing store could be set up as a kind of store with extended opening hours, says Niedreiter.
Anyone wishing to make rooms available to the DRK for a clothing store or having a meeting advice is requested to contact the DRK District Association on Hegelstraße in Peine by phone (0 51 71) 7 67 50 or by e-mail to info@drkpeine. to report.
