Municipal Council: The front yard leading to the morgue / sewer connection will be covered

bitch. Mourning societies offering the deceased their last caravan at Bitzer Cemetery are currently exposed to wind and weather. This is especially problematic in winters in cold weather, in the rain, but also in extreme heat.

“The number of non-denominational citizens is increasing, and fewer and fewer people want funeral services in the vicinity of the church,” explains Mayor Hubert Schiele at a recent meeting of the local council.

The solution: a roof over part of the front yard that protects mourners beneath from the weather. The project has been repeatedly delayed in mid-term financial planning, and now it must finally materialize.

Architect Friedrich Straubinger of Burladingen worked with management on a potential roofing project over the mortuary front yard, which she submitted to town councils.

The roof is fitted with glass walls on three sides to protect it from the weather, and the space will be furnished with wood-paneled seats. And last but not least, there must be a strip of skylight.

The possibility of installing a photovoltaic system on the roof was also discussed. The cost to implement the design is approximately € 231,000 including additional construction costs. € 37,000, which is planned to renovate the morgue, is already included.

Some local councils have expressed concerns about whether the glass walls will not encourage heat build-up under the canopy in the summer. But Wolfgang Zemin responded by saying that snow and hail in the high Bitzer area could be a problem. However, it only heated up in a few days.

Margita Barth suggests thinking of a mortuary green roof – for environmental reasons, but also for visual reasons.

The hall is the last building connected to the canal

In this step, the morgue, which is the last building in the community with wastewater, will be connected to the sewage system. Since the sewer connection can no longer be made economically after the roof has been built, it must be installed in advance. The Kovacic Ingenieure office estimated the costs of connecting the sewers and installing a new paving covering the entire front yard of the morgue at around € 90,000.

Now it is imperative to advise on whether to completely repurpose the front yard or whether to create part of the green area.

A fee of € 15,000 will be incurred for the Kovacic office of Sigmaringen, which undertakes the tendering and planning for the implementation of civil engineering works, as well as € 30,000 for architectural services based on the design provided with the planning and preparation of the construction request and bidding. Costs include fees and structural planning. In total, construction work for the canopy and sewer connection amounts to € 321,000. An application has been submitted for funding from the compensation balance in the amount of € 95,000, and approval is still pending. “If the grant is approved, we can manage the budget,” said Schiel. This includes 240,000 euros for this procedure.

The city councils agreed to commission the architect Strobinger and Kovacic’s office to plan and bid for the two businesses.
