  • Near the Colosseum, archaeologists have discovered an ancient Roman house dating back to the end of the 2nd century BC.
  • It is particularly distinguished by its unusual wall mosaics, which consist of various types of shells, precious glass and white marble slabs.

Close to Rome’s famous Colosseum, archaeologists have discovered some rooms in an ancient Roman house with special mosaics. The Italian Ministry of Culture announced that researchers in the archaeological park discovered it between the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, one of Rome’s seven hills, and presented the new discovery on Tuesday.

The unusual mosaics on the walls of the luxurious house, which was probably built at the end of the 2nd century BC, are considered unusual. The complex scenes depicted on wall panels made of so-called rustic mosaics are particularly impressive, the statement continued.

These consist of various types of shells, mosaic stones, precious glass, small slabs of white marble and other multi-coloured stones. These include Celtic horns, parts of ships bearing tridents and vases from which tendrils and lotus flowers sprout. But also building outlines with columns and gates. The exact meaning of the scenes and images is unknown.

The town house with its rooms is located in an area not far from the so-called Horrea Agrippiana, the oldest huge warehouse complex from the Augustinian era along the trade route of ancient Rome. According to the findings of archaeologists, the house extended over two floors.
