The beginning of the season falls in the water for Katya Grossman.
Very bad luck for Swiss B Team driver Katja Grossmann (25). She fell while training in Zermatt and broke her hand. “It’s hard again to find the right words in this situation…” she wrote on Instagram for a photo showing her in the rescue helicopter. She broke all of her right metacarpal bones and already had a successful surgery. There are now three boards and 25 nails in your hand.
For Grossman, who has run two World Cup races so far (2021, the two downhill races in Val di Fassa, Italy), this is not the first serious injury. She suffered her first serious knee injury when she was not even 13 years old, which was followed by several tears in her ankle ligaments, other knee injuries and back pain.
Many injuries slow it down
But Grossman never gave up and celebrated her first European Cup success in the 2016/17 season. The speed specialist has made it into the top ten a total of nine times, and upon coming down from Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria) she finished second, the only European Cup podium to date. On top of that, she was the vice world junior champion in the downhill that same season.
But the next setback followed: in September 2017, she broke the tibia and fibula bones. Grossman is back after just four operations and 950 days later. It only lasted a few races. At nine she fell hard and broke her right hand. During the operation, a muscle had to be cut. Grossmann told the Jungfrau Zeitung newspaper at the time that the surgeon said he had “never seen such a complex fracture”.
Now her hand is broken again. Giving up is still out of the question for Grossman. She writes, “I will continue to fight and take advantage of this injury and come back stronger.” Her closing words were optimistic: “I’m sure luck will be on my side at some point.” (bear)
