Airlines launch special flights for Taylor Swift fans

“Thank you for your loving interactions with fans with absolute loyalty, or: cult-like worship” – the newspaper Die Zeit once wrote about singer Taylor Swift’s fans, known as Swifties. According to media reports, the first Swifties are currently camping in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the concert will be held in November.

No wonder Air New Zealand is adding extra flights to Taylor Swift concerts in Australia in February 2024. Air New Zealand has announced that 2000 extra seats are being created due to high demand. “This includes new round-trip services from Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland to Sydney and Melbourne, as well as additional seats on existing flights.”

The airline also says it will name some new planes NZ1989. Because 1989 was the singer’s fifth studio album, named after the year she was born.

When Taylor Swift’s tour dates were announced last week, Air New Zealand director of sales Leanne Geraghty said “the demand just skyrocketed”. “More than 3,500 Kiwis have booked flights to coincide with the concert dates.” This means additional business for the airline.

Air New Zealand is already making Swifties, and travel won’t be cheap. “During periods of high demand, fares are increased so that we can reserve smaller seats for last-minute travel,” the airline said.
