A painful end to Megan Rapinoe’s career

American icon Megan Rapinoe’s soccer career has come to a dramatic end. In the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) final, the 38-year-old was taken off the field after less than three minutes due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, and in the end, her club OL Reigns lost to Gotham FC 1:2 ( 1:2 ).

The American player said while crying after the final match on Saturday evening (local time) in San Diego: “It was difficult. This was definitely not the way I imagined the last match.”

The two-time world champion (2015 and 2019) and 2012 Olympic champion bid farewell to the US Women’s Professional League without winning any title. On the other hand, former Frankfurt player Ali Krieger celebrated the end of her career successfully.

Aside from her achievements in football, Rapinoe, the 2019 FIFA Women’s Player of the Year, was known for her social commitment. An outspoken activist, she campaigned for equal rights and also stood up to former US President Donald Trump.

In the 2023 World Cup, Rapinoe failed with the United States in the round of 16 and missed a penalty kick in the penalty shootout against Sweden. Rapinoe played her last international match on September 24 against South Africa (2-0).

As expected, the German Football Association has parted ways with women’s national team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. After the meeting, the contract has now been terminated.
