The German national under-20 ice hockey team lost their last group game at the U-20 World Championships in Canada on New Year’s Eve 8-1 against the Czech Republic – yet the mood at the start of the year wasn’t that bad. Because the day before, the team of national coach Tobias Apstreeter beat Austria 4: 2 and thus secured a ticket to the quarter-finals. Wit Oswald (Red Bull Munich) scored the consolation goal for Germany against the Czech Republic. In the quarter-finals, the German team, which also includes Weiden player Adrian Klein (currently the Straubing Tigers), will take on the very strong American team on Monday.
“We achieved our internal goal and now we’re back in the quarter-finals. Knowing full well the project against the American boys is almost hopeless,” Abkamfer said after the end of the preliminary round.
