France: Lin defeats Paris Saint-Germain
Lens, a small-town club in northern France, inflicted Paris Saint-Germain’s first Ligue 1 defeat of the season by 3-1 in Ligue 1. Lens, who lost only once out of 17 matches, reduced the gap to leaders Paris Saint-Germain to 4 points. Perhaps the duel was well timed for the chasers, because the champions had to do without Lionel Messi and Neymar. Messi was released after the World Cup celebrations, and Neymar was suspended. Meanwhile, Monaco also won the second match after the World Cup break. The fourth-placed team, with Swiss Priel Empolo, beat Brest Stadium 1-0 at home.
England: Tottenham lose at home
Tottenham Hotspur got off to a bad start in the new year. Coach Antonio Conte’s team lost 2-0 to Aston Villa at home in the English Premier League. This opens up a chance for Liverpool to knock the Londoners out of fifth place in the table with a win over Brentford on Monday. Chelsea also lost feathers in the race for European places. The “Blues” with Denis Zakaria (up to 61) never got past the 1-1 draw with Remo Freuler at Nottingham Forest.
