Climate activists have caused problems at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.
Climate activists are again causing a stir. This time at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (Netherlands). The APS reported that the protesters, according to the police, intercepted private planes at the airport site. Some also chained themselves to planes. Scheduled flights to and from Schiphol were not affected by the protest.
Police also arrested protesters who were riding bicycles around the airport. The special forces had to drag some of them away, and according to the activists, one protester was wounded.
People in a mess want fewer flights and more trains
About 500 activists managed to break through the fence in a parking lot and reach the terminal buildings, while others demonstrated inside the terminal building for fewer flights from Schiphol and especially against private aircraft. Airport residents, battling aircraft noise, also joined the protest at the airport.
As announced by Greenpeace, the demonstrators prevented private planes from taking off from Schiphol. With a sit-down under a plane, about two dozen activists shut down a parked plane. “We are calling for fewer flights, more trains, and a ban on short non-essential flights and private jets,” said Dewey Zloch of Greenpeace Netherlands.
