No jackpot has ever been bigger – nowhere else in the world: the US Powerball Lottery draws a record-winning card on Saturday night.
In the United States, the jackpot in the Powerball lottery has grown to $1.6 billion, making it the largest jackpot in the world in lottery history. The lottery operator said before the next draw on Saturday night that the Powerball jackpot is now “the largest lottery prize ever offered in the world.”
The jackpot has grown steadily since there was another winner in early August. Since then, in 39 draws, no player has been able to pick six correct numbers.
If a player wins the jackpot on Saturday night, he can expect $1.6 billion, equivalent to about CHF 1.6 billion. He can pay the amount over about 30 years — or choose a one-time payment of about $782.4 million.
Participation in the United States only
In January 2016, three Powerball players participated in the world’s largest jackpot in history, totaling $1.586 billion. The second highest jackpot – and the highest prize ever won by a single player – was $1.537 billion and was registered in October 2018 in the Mega Millions lottery.
Powerball lottery tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 US states plus the metropolitan area of Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. The chance of winning the jackpot is about 1 in 292 million. For comparison, the risk of being struck by lightning in the United States is about one in a million. (AFP/kes)
