The Russian Defense Ministry announced Thursday in Moscow that they include citizens of Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Ukraine.
Accordingly, three military transport planes flew towards the Afghan capital, Kabul. On board were 36 tons of humanitarian cargo. Russia had already moved 400 people from Afghanistan to safety at the end of August.
Attacks have been frequent in Afghanistan since the hardline Islamist Taliban movement came to power. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic. After the withdrawal of NATO forces, the Taliban occupied large parts of the country. They entered Kabul on August 15 without a fight and have been in power ever since.
Russia, along with other countries, is trying to find a political solution and has already hosted several conferences on the country’s future. Moscow is concerned about the possible deterioration of the security situation among its Central Asian allies. Countries like Tajikistan are directly bordered by Afghanistan.
