The Avengers did, now the Eternals are coming! The latest Marvel movie will be shown in Swiss cinemas on November 3. While the Avengers story was largely told in the big “Endgame” finale, a new superhero team is now in focus.
The “Immortals” are ten immortal beings who were sent to Earth 7,000 years ago to protect humanity from evil “perverted” monsters. Each of them has different powers at their disposal. For example, Cersei (Jimma Chan, 38) can change anything with her hands or Icaris (Richard Madden, 35) can fly and shoot lasers from his eyes. When the Perverts return after several centuries of peace, the Eternals must resume the fight for life on Earth.
Angelina Jolie convince
Marvel’s latest work isn’t lacking in star power. All ten immortal warriors are represented by more famous actors (Salma Hayek, 55) or less (Kamil Nanjiani, 43). It’s especially nice to see Angelina Jolie (46 years old) in the action role again. As warrior goddess Thena, she convinces the movie star’s allure that not all of her co-stars have. It’s a shame, because Jolie’s Thena quickly becomes a minor character in the midst of so many characters.
In general, there is a lot of everything in Eternals: too many lengthy explanations about the universe, too many changes to the landscape, too many flashbacks. How difficult it would be to tell the beginnings of a superhero team in just one movie shown by rival DC’s Justice League. So far, Marvel has skillfully avoided this trap with its “Avengers” movies – only to now get into the “Eternals” movie itself. The movie is 156 minutes long in total. Too long for a superhero movie that finally wants to be an entertainment movie.
Gorgeous landscape photos by Chloé Zhao
What convinces: Director Chloe Chow (39) has a talent for great visuals. “Eternals” is the most beautiful Marvel movie ever. Zhao’s fondness for stunning landscape shots that frame the characters is perhaps the only thing “Eternals” and her previous movie, “Nomadland” have in common. Unfortunately, Zhao’s quiet moments are quickly interrupted by computer-generated combat footage. The movie has a lot of that, too.
“Eternals” is finally once again the well-known average performer from Marvel. It’s not a bad movie, in fact, there are plenty that are perfectly compelling. But overall, the movie falls flat thanks to its tendency to exaggerate all together unfortunately. And Marvel is moving away from the high point superhero movies left behind with the end of the old Avengers era.
