BALTIMORE – American golfer Patrick Cantlay earned himself a multi-million dollar starting position before the season’s end by winning his second FedExCup Championship.
The 29-year-old won an extra sixth hole jump at the BMW Championship in Baltimore, Maryland, against fellow countryman Bryson Deschamps and celebrated his third win of the season.
The Americans had previously required a total of 261 strokes in all four rounds on the par-72 course at Caves Valley Golf Club. Cantlay raised $1.71 million in prize money for his fifth win on the PGA Tour and also earned a spot on Team USA for the Ryder Cup at the end of September.
Starting Thursday, the Tour Championship is the final of the million-dollar show in Atlanta. The top 30 pros compete in the FedExCup Rankings at East Lake Golf Club. According to special regulations, Cantlay goes to the final tournament as a two-stroke overall against fellow countryman Tony Finau. The winner of the FedExCup collects the world’s largest grand prize of $15 million, which is distributed to one professional athlete. In total, bonuses in the amount of 60 million dollars are distributed to players.
