Woman pays $7,112 for a Subway sandwich — no refund

A woman from Atlanta (USA) was amazed when she checked her credit card statement. Vera Conner ordered her usual sandwich from Subway: she later found a bill for more than $7,000 on her credit card.

“I could have flown to Italy and eaten a sandwich there.” Conner told consumer investigator Justin Gray of US broadcaster WSB-TV Channel 2.

Conner checks her credit card statements at the end of every week. She noticed the unusually high fees: instead of the usual $7.54, she was charged $7,112.98 (about 6,280 francs).

She now suspects an error occurred when entering the tip at the payment terminal. The sequence of numbers corresponded to parts of her phone number – which she wanted to enter to collect reward points.

However, correcting the error turned out to be more difficult than expected: Conner had been trying unsuccessfully to get the charge dismissed for nearly a month.

Both the Subway restaurant manager and its credit card company, Bank of America, initially declined to discuss the matter. They denied her request for a refund.

“This is unbelievable because everyone who sees this should know it’s wrong. I used to work in retail. I know how we settle down at the end of the day,” Conner said.

After the story was shared on social media and Bank of America reached out to Subway, the company responded: They were in the process of processing the chargeback.
