Without Sabalis: Basketball players with a clear defeat against Australia

Third place at the World Cup is huge for Germany's basketball players. However, Olympic qualification is still possible – despite Serbia's win over Brazil on the night.

German basketball players suffered a clear defeat in the second game of Olympic qualification. On Saturday in Belem, Brazil, national coach Lisa Thomaidis' team lost 52:85 (24:54) against top-ranked Australia and had no chance. Without two ailing WNBA professionals Satou and Nyara Sabally, Germany was already hopelessly behind at the break. Top German shooter Leonie Fiebich was back with 12 points.

German basketball players still have a good chance of qualifying for the Olympic Games for the first time after a surprise upset against two-time European champions Serbia earlier Thursday. Germany's win against hosts Brazil on Monday night (00:00 CET) is enough for DBB qualification after a second-round loss against Serbia on Saturday.

Germany will advance to the Olympics if the already qualified Australians win against Serbia (9pm CET), despite losing by a maximum of six points.
