One of the five tropical storm types has started its path in a sparsely populated coastal area near Cairns in northeastern Australia.
“Jasper” has not yet officially made landfall as the eye of the storm has not yet moved offshore, said Steven Miles, the deputy head of the affected Queensland state government, on Wednesday afternoon (local time). The Australian Bureau of Meteorology announced on X (formerly Twitter) that it should occur near the town of Wjal Wujal in the evening.
Australian news agency AAP wrote early on Wednesday that the cyclone would hit the area between Cairns and Hope Vale with gusts of up to 140 kilometers per hour and likely cause flooding.
Accordingly, heavy rain fell before the arrival of “Jasper.” More than 15,000 homes are without power, Miles said. More than 90 people have already sought emergency accommodation.
Miles urged residents to stay safe. “Now is no time to be outside,” he said. There were no initial reports of injuries or specific damage.
