- Berlin photographer Boris Eldgesen has turned down a prestigious award and wants to start a discussion about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in photography.
- The Sony World Photography Awards honored Eldhosen with his work “Pseudomnesia: The Electrician,” as reported by the BBC.
The grim image shows two women of different generations standing one behind the other and, according to Eldgsson, was created in part using artificial intelligence.
According to the BBC, those responsible for the award from the World Photography Organization said Eldhosen had not previously indicated how much artificial intelligence played a role in his contribution.
«You need an open discussion in the world of images»
The artist himself explained on his website that he presented the AI work as a test to see if competitions like this were set up for it. “Artificial intelligence images and photography should not be competing in awards like this. “They are different things,” he wrote in his reasoning for not accepting the award.
Instead, he wants to speed up what he sees as urgently needed discussion. “We need an open discussion in the photo world about what we want to be considered photography and what isn’t.”
