London. The number of people on waiting lists for routine procedures in English hospitals is at an all-time high. The National Health Service (NHS) announced on Thursday that seven million people in England alone, Britain’s largest region, were waiting for routine surgery at the end of August. That was 200,000 more than the previous month and the highest since records began in 2007. Waiting times for nearly 390,000 patients are already more than a year, the PA news agency reported, citing the NHS.

The UK also has a notorious record for emergency department waiting times. According to this, 32,776 patients had to wait more than twelve hours in the emergency department in September.

Unlike health insurance companies in Germany, the health service in Great Britain is not funded by NHS (National Health Service) contributions, but must cover its costs from a budget set by the government. It has long been considered underfunded.
