Qualifiers in the Swiss League? This is more possible than ever. While the Swiss league hasn’t had much experience in such a situation, there are some Swiss footballers who are used to it – including Michael Frey, Noah Okafor, Cedric Itten and possibly soon Xherdan Shaqiri.
An outside look shows that the Swiss Football League (SFL) is not the first league to have this idea. In the Belgian Jupiler League (since 2009), in the Austrian League (since 2018), in the Scottish Premier League (since 2007) and in the MLS (since its founding in 1996), such a system is already an arrangement from day one.
Some championships are back
The play-off is not the same as the play-off. Each league has its own mode that is laid down to the smallest detail. Sometimes to the point that the leaders of the league hold back a little – for example in Denmark. At least the basic idea is the same everywhere: the tension within the tournament should be increased.
But play-offs are not only known in countries that are supposed to be the youngest footballers. This situation reached England, Spain and Italy – but not in the first place. In the second largest of the leagues (The Championship, LaLiga 2 and Serie B), the third rookie team is determined in head-to-head playoff duels.
In Italy, as in Germany, there are frequent discussions about adapting the situation to the playoffs in the Premier League. In upcoming discussions, they may be able to draw on the Swiss experience. (sword)
