Adelaide – Australian footballer Josh Cavallo of Adelaide United FC got symbolically engaged to his partner at his club's ground.
“It's perfect to share this special moment on the pitch where it all started,” the 24-year-old wrote on Instagram, posting a photo of himself kneeling on the pitch in front of partner Leighton Morrell and Holding. Ring on hand. Empty stands are seen in the background.
At the same time, Cavallo thanked his club. “Your endless support means so much to me,” the footballer wrote. “You have created a safe place in football that I could never have dreamed of and you have inspired me to live authentically every day of my life.” The post has already been liked over 190,000 times. Besides many positive comments and congratulations, there were also insults.
Cavallo came out as gay in 2021 – the first player in the A-League, the highest division of Australian football. “I am proud to publicly announce that I am gay,” he said in a video released by the club. It's been a long road in his life, but he's very happy with the decision to come out. “Adelaide United made me realize football is more than a game – it's a family.” He received a lot of recognition for his action. Cavallo is now considered a prominent advocate for LGBTQI+ rights.
