The President of the Central Asian country allowed the national airline to purchase new aircraft. Turkmen Airlines wants to order six planes from Boeing.
Turkmenistan scores just 1.66 out of 10 on The Economist’s Democracy Index – lower than Saudi Arabia. This means that the Central Asian country gives its citizens little freedom and rules in an authoritarian manner. The strong man is Sardar Bardi Muhammadu. In fact, the president decides on almost everything – including the development of the national airline’s fleet.
Last Saturday (June 10) Berdymukhamedov signed a decree allowing Türkmenhowaýollary (Turkmen) or Turkmen Airlines to sign a contract with Boeing. The content is the purchase of four Boeing 737 Max 8s and two Boeing 777-300ERs. However, long-haul aircraft from the portfolio will be delivered by TMH Aviation Leasing.
Also two cargo planes in the fleet
As reported by state media, the airline wants to grow with new aircraft and modernize its fleet. Currently, Turkmenistan Airlines’ fleet consists of four Boeing 737-700s, eight 737-800s, three 757-200s, four 777-200s, one Bombardier CRJ 700 for VIP transport, and two Airbus A330F freighters.
