Loic Millard wins the season-ending giant slalom in Saalbach. Thomas Tumler won the Winter World Cup in third place, and Marco Odermatt was eliminated as captain after the first round.
In the giant slalom two weeks ago in Aspen, Colorado, Odermatt and Millard finished first and second both times. In Saalbach too, the same scenario seemed predetermined after the first round. The man from Nidwalden topped the intermediate classification by four tenths over Romand. Millard claimed his second World Cup victory in the giant slalom after winning in Schladming in January last year, his fourth overall. Thomas Tummler, who started in Group A with a top seven for the first time, finished his best season at the age of 34, with the spotlight on him in the last few weeks.
The third place behind Andorra's Joan Verdo was Tumler's second top-three finish in a World Cup giant slalom, and third ever at that level. More than five years ago in Beaver Creek, Colorado, he also came out of nowhere to finish third with the No. 48. With the sixth-place finish, Gino Caviezel earned his second-best finish this winter after a fifth-place finish in the giant slalom at Palisades-Tahoe.
For Odermatt, both series ended in disqualification. The Swiss central missed out on winning his 10th giant slalom at this year's Winter World Cup and taking his 13th straight win. It was also the first time after 26 World Cup giant slalom races that Odermatt remained without a podium finish. (Saw/SDA)
