The decades-long preference of minorities in allocating coveted places at America’s top universities has been controversial from the outset: to this day, supporters argue that this is necessary to right past injustices. Opponents countered that “affirmative action” would only create new injustices because white or Asian citizens, for example, would be disadvantaged, even if they had better academic achievement.

The United States needs a diverse elite that governs a diverse society. But the elite only partially became more diverse.
