US Constitutional Court overturns race preference in college admissions. Our commentator Michael Weissenborn believes that liberal American citizens could take a similar stand against this situation as they did against the abortion rule.
The decades-long preference of minorities in allocating coveted places at America’s top universities has been controversial from the outset: to this day, supporters argue that this is necessary to right past injustices. Opponents countered that “affirmative action” would only create new injustices because white or Asian citizens, for example, would be disadvantaged, even if they had better academic achievement.
conservative judgment
The conservative-dominated US Constitutional Court has essentially followed this stance in its decision against Harvard University and North Carolina State University. Chief Justice John Roberts formulated the conservative majority opinion that “a student should be treated on the basis of his or her experiences as an individual—not on the basis of skin color.”
The elite are only partially more diverse
The ruling could have far-reaching political consequences – not least in the next race for the presidency. Liberal citizens of the United States could take a similar stand against this as they did against this Abortion rule. Even if preference approval has been declining recently. The United States needs a diverse elite that governs a diverse society. But the elite only partially became more diverse. To right the biggest wrongs in society, the economy and education, completely different measures are needed.
