Global lithium production is limited to a few countries. Australia is the world’s largest producer of lithium.
As stated therein U.S. Geological Survey Six mines in Australia, one tailings operation in Brazil, two brine operations each in Argentina and Chile, and three mines and two brine operations in China contribute heavily to global lithium production. The amount of lithium mined in Australian mines alone is estimated to be around 61,000 tonnes in 2022. Australia and Chile together account for nearly 80% of the international mining and brine production of lithium. In addition, smaller operations in Brazil, Canada, China, Portugal, the United States and Zimbabwe also contribute to global lithium production, the US company said. Due to rapid increases in demand and prices for lithium in 2022, worldwide installed lithium operations have increased or are in the process of increasing production capacity.
