A project to demonstrate zero-emission transport solutions for long-distance transport with battery-powered trucks has been launched in Great Britain. It is scheduled to run for five years and is funded by the British Government. This is with the Inovate UK initiative, which is not associated with any ministry. The aim is to support both the introduction of fully electrified long-distance transport and the establishment of public charging infrastructure for trucks.
Dutch truck manufacturer DAF is participating in the program with the XD Electric and XF Electric series of tractors used by large operators. Fleets of Maritime Transport, Marks & Spencer, Menzies, Royal Mail and Eddy Stobart are included in the scheme. The trucks have a range of up to 500 kilometers and a permissible gross weight of 42 tonnes.
The demonstrator project follows the completion of recent practical testing of battery-powered delivery trucks. The 20 DAF LF Electric was used for urban freight transport by public bodies including the National Health Service (NHS) and local authorities in England. (Om)
