Max Verstappen returned to pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix. Nico Hulkenberg was subsequently re-appointed.
Even rain can’t stop Max Verstappen. The 25-year-old Dutchman celebrated his 25th place in the aquatic qualifiers for the Canadian Grand Prix. The two-time world champion and clear overall leader got a second or more out of competing in the weather lottery in Montreal.
Only short joy at Hulkenberg
Behind Verstappen, Nico Hülkenberg (+1.244 seconds) was surprisingly second in his Haas. The German capitalized on a slip by Oscar Piastri in his McLaren Mercedes in Q3, which brought out the red flag. After the break, the rain became heavier.
However, Hülkenberg’s joy was short-lived: the Haas driver went down for violating the rules and will now start the race only fifth on Sunday. The race judges penalized the offense committed by the German, who was driving too fast when the red flag was shown.
Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) finished third on the front row next to Verstappen after the penalty against Hulkenberg. Behind them are Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. With Charles Leclerc (11/Ferrari) and Sergio Perez (12/Red Bull), two big names stuck in the second quarter.
Once again, the drivers of the Alfa Romeo-Ferrari racing team remained in Hinwil without any exploits: Valtteri Bottas made it to the second part of qualifying, but only managed to reach 15th place on the grid. Guanyu Zhou was only 20th, and therefore the last .
