Mexico crowned the Gold Cup for the ninth time. Against Panama, the favorite trembles 1-0.
Mexico remains the measure of all things Gold Cup. Coach Jaime Lozano’s team defeated Panama 1-0 and won the title.
The winner of the final in Englewood (California) in front of 73,000 spectators was 22-year-old Santiago Jimenez with his goal in the 88th minute. The striker from Feyenoord Rotterdam, who had just come on as a substitute, played around the opponent past the halfway line, running more than half Pitch and complete the fast attack with confidence.
Panama must continue to wait
Panama lost the Gold Cup final for the third time after 2005 and 2013 (to the USA) and is still waiting for its first title in the continental championship in the CONCACAF region (North, Central America and the Caribbean).
For Mexico, it was the ninth title win in the competition, which has been held since 1991. The USA follows with seven wins. Only in 2000 was Canada, another national team, able to win the Gold Cup.
