Captain Ilkay Gundogan believes that the national team is on the right track after the trip to the United States. “It was clear to us in advance that the curve was not only pointing up, but that there would also be difficult matches,” the 32-year-old said after a 2-2 draw with Mexico in Philadelphia on Wednesday. “We are still in the learning process. We know we have to turn some screws,” Gundogan said.

Before the match, national coach Julian Nagelsmann named him captain of the team for next summer’s home European Championship. He has had no contact with Manuel Neuer (37), who was sidelined for more than ten months after breaking his leg but is now on the verge of returning to goalkeeping for Bayern Munich.
“We all congratulate Manu for getting back to fitness quickly, and for him to come back as quickly and as well as possible, because every world-class team can use Manuel Neuer at his best,” Gundogan said. The exchange with Manu was always great for me personally. No problem on either side. When he comes back sometime, we’ll see what happens next.”
