Georgia reaches a major tournament for the first time. Ukraine and Poland also qualify for the European Championship in Germany through qualifiers.

The Georgia national team, coached by Willy Sagnol, won the final match against Greece on penalties and will play its first match in the European Championship next June in Germany against Turkey. Other rivals in the group are Portugal and the Czech Republic.

The Georgian team, whose captain Choycha Kvarachelia of Napoli was injured in extra time, fared better after 120 scoreless minutes and won on penalties 4-2. Lech Poznań's Nika Kwikwiskiri scored the decisive try.

After a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, Poland also secured their ticket to the European Championship via a penalty shootout. In Cardiff against Wales, the visitors scored all their attempts, starting with captain Robert Lewandowski's shot. On the Welsh side, the fifth and final shooter, Leeds United's Daniel James, failed. The win was fortunate for Poland, as Lewandowski and company did not put a shot on target for Wales until the penalty shootout. In the European Championship, they will play in Group D against France, Austria and the Netherlands.

Ukraine corrected its deficit in the first half with a score of 0-1 against Iceland in Wroclaw, Poland. In the second half, Girona's Viktor Tsyganko scored (54') and Chelsea's Mikailo Modric (84'). This is the fourth time in a row that Ukraine participates in the European Championship. In Germany, the Ukrainians play in the preliminary round against Belgium, Romania and Slovakia. (seda)
