Evacuation: The resort island of Elba is on fire

A forest fire has been raging on the Italian holiday island of Elba since Monday evening. In order to be on the safe side, around 700 people who were staying at the camp site and in several residential buildings in the affected area have been evacuated. This was announced by the Civil Defense of the Tuscany Region on Tuesday on the online platform X (formerly Twitter).

The forests between the cities of Rio Marina, Puerto Azuro and Ortano are particularly affected by the fire on the island. There were initially no reports of injuries. Firefighting work is still going on.

According to the fire department, the fire broke out on Monday evening. At around nine o’clock in the evening, the residents of the area sounded the alarm. Because of the wind, the fire spread quickly. According to the information, a total of 14 hectares have been burned so far.

Due to extensive work by the emergency services during the night, the fire was brought under control on Tuesday morning, according to the Civil Protection. Therefore, two helicopters and two planes were used to fight the fires. If the situation does not deteriorate, the evacuees could return to their homes and shelters in the evening.
