Embrey loses to Pardubice despite leading 2-0

At least HC Ambri-Piotta's Spengler Cup fairy tale did not find a smooth continuation in Davos. Leventiner's team lost to Dinamo Pardubice after leading 2-0, then 2-3 after extra time.

HC Ambri-Piotta managed the start phase only at will. After just eight minutes, Ticino led 2-0 thanks to two goals scored by Alex Formenton. And after that? Ambre lost ground, and perhaps wanting to control the advance, fell into a passive position and was completely dominated by the Czechs. Dinamo Pardubice had a total of 40:14 shots on goal until Lukas Sedlak scored a 3-2 winner after 61:15 minutes.

On the other hand, Dinamo Pardubice excelled in the opening match. The team with all Czech players showed why they are currently dominating the Czech Extra League. It leads Sparta Prague in the tournament by eight points. All other teams are 16 or more points behind Pardubice. Vaclav Varada's (formerly Davos) side did not let them be bothered and were rewarded for their perseverance. Matej Pawlovich (30) and Tomas Zohorna (48) tied in regular time.

For Embry, the complex matches in the Spengler Cup are not a new experience. The Leventineers impressed in their first two appearances in 2019 (semi-final) and 2022 (championship win). Embry won six of her seven Spengler Cup matches. However, Ticino regularly expressed its problems with Czech teams in Davos: four years ago they suffered their only semi-final defeat to Trenik. A year ago, Sparta Prague tasted championship victory in the final against Umbry. Embry narrowly won the final on New Year's Eve 3-2 in overtime.

For Ambre-Piotta, the tournament continues Wednesday afternoon. In the second match, Embry will face Finnish representative Kalpa Kuopio, winner of the 2018 Spengler Cup.
