  • In the presidential elections held in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, current President Felix Tshisekedi achieved a clear victory according to provisional results.
  • As the Electoral Commission announced on Sunday, the politician, who is considered pro-Western, received 13.2 million votes. That is 73.3% of the votes.
  • The Constitutional Court in the second largest African country will announce the official final result.

Even before the provisional election results were announced on December 20, nine opposition candidates called for new elections on Sunday and announced that they did not want to recognize the results of the electoral commission. Election-related demonstrations are expected to be held in Kinshasa and in a number of other cities, especially in the east of the country.

Tshisekedi had the best chance in the election in Africa's second-largest country – also because the opposition could not agree on a common candidate. At the beginning of his first term, he announced his desire to transform the country into an African Germany. Businessman Moise Katumbi, who was considered a promising contender, and eight other candidates, in a joint appearance, criticized the irregularities witnessed in the elections and called for new elections with an “independent electoral commission.”

About 44 million people were summoned to vote. The population of this resource-rich country in Central Africa, which is the size of Western Europe, is 100 million people. Members of the national parliament and regional parliaments in the country's governorates were also elected, in addition to local representatives. However, in many polling stations, it was not possible to vote on the actual election day due to lack of voter lists, faulty voting machines or other problems, so voting had to be extended at short notice and voting was held over several days.
