Show and pomp of Rama X
The Thai King celebrates his 70th birthday in a cheerful way
Thousands of fairy lights and extra rides on the train: On his 70th birthday, Thai King Rama X lets him snuggle up. People have to pay.
Ordinary birthday party with family? Not with Thai King Vajiralongkorn (70), aka Rama X. On his historic birthday, the grandiose king really lets him rip – at the expense of his people.
Such as “picture” Reports said, Rama X had about three million light bulbs hanging in the Thai capital, Bangkok, for his historic birthday. The fairy lights are about 41 kilometers long. These select streets and 13 bridges in the capital are illuminated in honor of Rama X – every day from 6.30pm to 9pm.
The global shortage of energy is irrelevant, and so is money. The light scene that can be admired even on Thursday costs a lot. Therefore, electricity prices will rise in August. “It is true that the fee increase is the first in several years,” a Stadtwerke spokesperson told Bild.

Otherwise, Rama X. is really on the gas. State Railways operates two steam locomotives from Bangkok to Ayutthaya – the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam – especially for the Thai King’s birthday. The palace declares that anyone who books a ticket can “demonstrate their loyalty to His Majesty the King”.
But not everyone can buy a ticket: a ticket costs about 25 francs, and the average income of Thais is about 430 francs. A trip with private trains is an expensive pleasure.
Rama X. has rarely appeared in Thailand in recent years. It was mostly spotted at official ceremonies. Other than that, the king spent a lot of time in a luxury hotel in Bavaria – and repeatedly stopped at Zurich airport. His queen also loves to travel in Europe, and she is seen repeatedly, especially in Switzerland. (zis)
