Controversial visit – Pelosi has no Taiwan on itinerary – News

  • US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is unlikely to travel to Taiwan, after all.
  • The travel list published on Sunday morning (Switzerland time) does not include the island country.
  • Accordingly, the third-highest American will visit Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.

The California Democrat’s announcement that she would visit Taiwan had raised diplomatic tensions between Washington and Beijing for several days. In a joint phone call, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his US counterpart, Joe Biden, not to burn his fingers on the island.

“Today, our Congressional delegation travels to the Indo-Pacific to reaffirm America’s strong and unwavering commitment to our allies and friends in the region,” Pelosi said.

Media reports, which conveyed from those around her that she is also considering a visit to Taiwan, went without comment.

Chinese military exercises

Tensions between the United States and China have risen in the recent past.

Apparently, as a warning to Washington, the Chinese military conducted live-fire exercises near Taiwan on Saturday. As authorities announced, parts of the waters off Fujian Province were closed. The region lies north of the Taiwan Strait, which separates mainland China from the island of the Republic of Taiwan.
