Boris Becker is free again and is now back on German soil.
After seven-and-a-half months in the British Hundercombe prison in the south of England, Boris Becker (55) is back on German soil. The tennis legend will be able to enjoy his newfound freedom in Germany in time for Christmas – but he won’t be able to see his children until further notice. Sons Amadeus (12), Noah (28) and Elias (23) and daughter Anna (22) still live in London, where their father is not allowed to travel for long.
Boris Becker was jailed for two-and-a-half years by a London court in April for bankruptcy offences. However, he benefited from a special rule allowing foreign prisoners in Britain to be released and deported a year earlier than usual to make room in British prisons. However, this exemption has consequences for Becker: for now, he is no longer allowed to set foot on British soil.
“If an EU citizen is deported from Great Britain during his or her actual prison sentence, an entry ban is usually granted – either for a limited period or for the remainder of the prison term,” family law lawyer Marco Oldenburger explains to German private broadcaster RTL.
An entry ban is possible for ten years
It is unclear when Boris Becker will be able to return to Great Britain and see his family in London again. Oldenburger gives an estimate: “Boris Becker will be able to return to the UK after almost two years since he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in April 2022.” According to German media reports, the former Wimbledon winner could face an entry ban of up to ten years under British immigration law. Then Boris Becker won’t set foot in Great Britain until 2032.

However, legal experts believe that this is unlikely due to Boris Becker’s popularity. Attorney Paul Vogel explained to “Bild” newspaper that Becker can work toward exemptions with good legal backing. “Being interested in the presence of Great Britain Boris Becker is certainly more useful than a formal application. For example, he should work professionally at Wimbledon, » explains the lawyer.
So Boris Becker is hoping to return to his adopted country and his family in Great Britain soon. Until then, his children can also visit him in Germany – without bars in between.
